No. 1 The Power of Subtle Colors.A common mistake when selecting paint colors for a room is to overlook the subtle shades which are very powerful when used on large surfaces like walls. The clear colors should be reserved for beach houses, children's rooms or very contemporary spaces because they are brighter than you think when used for an entire room. In addition, the trim should be tinted - only use pure white with bright or clear colors. The same goes for the ceiling. It should be tinted or the same as an off-white trim, but with a flat finish rather than a gloss. No. 2 "Out with the Old" Doesn't Apply. The rooms in your home should be warm and comfortable, as well as reflect your personality and lifestyle. It's hard to do that when everything is brand new so include a piece with age in every room to provide provenance and character. The exception to this would be in ultra modern interiors, which can be evocative in their own way. For the average home, adding an older piece can be really distinctive and make all the difference. No. 3 Everybody Looks Better in Dim Lights.Flatter your guests by turning down the lights! By adding slide dimmers to as many lights as you can - over dining tables, hallways, and sconces - you ensure everyone looks their best in a warm, soft glow rather than a harsh bright light. The lights at exterior entries can benefit from dimmers as well, softening it to the level of a gas light. Plus it saves energy! Dimmers are not available for fluorescent bulbs but they now work on the new energy efficient CFLs. No. 4 Mix and Don't Match. All of us tend to stay in our comfort zones, particularly when we know we have to live with something for a while. Pushing the edge with an unexpected fabric is a great way to add an interesting element to a room, without overwhelming it. Don't match all your colors too much -- add a red, animal print or hint of chartreuse when it might not be anywhere else in the room. No. 5 Design Doesn't Stop at the Door.Make a statement by focusing on the front door's exterior. The right finish on the door itself can make a huge difference (and by the way, painting the interior side like the exterior adds a nice punctuation). Additionally, front door exterior lights are often too small. Don't be afraid to use something substantial to give scale to the entry. Lastly, never set bushes right by the door unless they are in pots. Keep it open and inviting so folks know where the front door is. |
